Steroid use: what are the allegations?

Generally the people these days are under the faith that taking steroids will robotically make the consumer become built and brawny, which in actual is not so. While undergoing steroid use, the user must still continue to exercise. Some people also believe that the only way to attain a muscular build is by using steroids, yet again, this is totally wrong. Many people who work hard achieve an excellent physique unsurprisingly. There are many allegations of steroid use. Different celebrities have different point to claim.

Steroids have been used for years for medical treatment. They were developed in the 1930’s to prevent the atrophy or break down, of muscle, in patients with debilitating illnesses. They were also given to patients who had been severely burned. The first non-medical use of steroids was during World War II.

Many serious side effects and health risks are involved with using steroids. Allegations of steroid use must be brought to your physicians notice. Early symptoms of steroid abuse are serious cystic acne, significant, sudden increases in body weight, headaches, dizziness, severe leg and abdominal cramping, and premature hair loss. Health risks concerning the cardiovascular system include cholesterol modifications, anaphylactic shock, heart disease, high blood pressure, septic shock, and even death may be possible. Effects to the reproductive system include genital atrophy, genital swelling, sexual dysfunction, sterility, impotence, prostate enlargement, foetal damage, and menstrual irregularities. The liver and kidneys are under constant attack by steroids.

Long-Term Effects of Steroids

Many of the side effects of steroids can be seen from someone’s outward appearance changes or through their behaviours. Some long-term effects of steroid abuse cannot be observed. Though steroid use does not activate the same intense, instant response in the brain as another substance like cocaine, it can create variations to the brain over time. These changes can impact the production and supply of certain chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters.

These changes in the brain can lead to changes in mood and behaviour in the person. In the long-term, anabolic steroid abuse can cause:

  • Anger and aggression
  • Heart attack.
  • Kidney failure.
  • Tumours in the liver.
  • Blood-borne diseases from injection use.

Short-Term Effects of Steroids

People who use and abuse anabolic steroids do so for the effects related to improved physical performance and muscle growth. However, with these intended improvements in strength and performance there can come many unwanted short-term effect. These generally include:

  • Mood swings.
  • Restlessness/ agitation.
  • Decreased appetite.
  • Trouble sleeping.
  • Decreased sperm count.

Steroid use may lead to dependency. Dependency on the drug is illustrated in the feeling that the person cannot function normally without the steroids in their system. Overuse leads to an increase of the hormones in the body, and it can cause more severe side effects than lower doses. When the drug is stopped, you may be left with a strong feeling that you need to take them again. This occurs even though there are unpleasant and sometimes severe side effects taking place. In these cases, withdrawal treatment may be necessary. Withdrawal should be monitored by medical professionals to help eliminate side effects or reduce their impact.
